Argo Summer Book Club

For our summer Japan Book Club, we turned our attention to Masks by Enchi Fumiko, a landmark work by one of the major Japanese women writers of the 20th century. Over a discussion of Noh theater masks, the Tale of Genji, religion, the role of women in Japanese society, and the life of Enchi herself, we enjoyed Japanese snacks and the black sesame baking prowess of one of our club members!

Our next book will be the Great Passage by Miura Shion, a warm novel about the making of a new Japanese dictionary and the lives of the people working on it. We’re also planning on starting in January a monthly club for 2020 to read through the Tale of Genji! If you’re interested, please contact Moti at to be added to our mailing list for when we get started.”
