August 17 Event: Summer Book Club

For its tenth edition, the book club returns with a bang, this time with a new and improved location – as well as an awesome book (as always)!

Here are the details for our upcoming summer book club meeting:

  • Date: Thursday, August 17, 2017
  • Time: 7 p.m.
  • Cost: free!
  • Location: The lounge of Argo Bookshop (1915, Sainte-Catherine St. West)!

Argo Bookshop (est. 1966), the oldest independent English-language bookstore in Montreal, is now owned by two fellow JET alumni, and long-time book club participants, who have generously invited us to use their lounge to host these events!

Look at said bookstore and lounge. I would live there.

For the event, we have decided to plunge into Manazuru, a short novel by Hiromi Kawakami.

Synopsis (224 pages)

Twelve years have passed since Kei’s husband, Rei, disappeared and she was left alone with her three-year-old daughter. Her new relationship with a married man – the antithesis of Rei – has brought her life to a numbing stasis, and her relationships with her mother and daughter have spilled into routine, day after day. Kei begins making repeated trips to the seaside town of Manazuru, a place that jogs her memory to a moment in time she can never quite locate. Her time there by the water encompasses years of unsteady footing and a developing urgency to find something.

If you are interested in joining us or have any questions, please contact us! The book is short enough that reading it should not take much time at all, and, even if you are not completely finished, your presence will always be welcome.
